Did you know that billions are spent annually on vitamins and supplements; but do consumers know the difference between natural and synthetic vitamins? There's a big difference! In short, it's the difference between something that's living (natural) and something that's dead (crystalline/synthetic). Let me explain...
Consumers do not know the difference between a synthetic, a crystalline, and a truly natural vitamin, or the difference between a chelated organic and an inorganic mineral. Moreover, they know little of how supplements are made, their characteristics, their attributes, their sources, their uses, their advantages and disadvantages, and how to tell one from another by reading a label.
One Vitamin
First, vitamins in their natural state always exist as living complexes with specific synergistic co-factors, enzymes, phytonutrients, and organic mineral-activators, and never as isolated single factors. In other words, a vitamin needs all of its synergists to function.
Second, crystalline means a natural food has been treated with various chemical, solvents, heat and distillations to reduce it down to one specific "pure" crystalline vitamin. All synergists, which are vital to the nutrient actually making a difference in the human body's quest for an optimum state of health, are destroyed. In essence, the chemist defines these synergists as "impurities." As a result, there is no longer anything "natural" in the action of crystalline "vitamins" - they should be more accurately defined as a drug.
Third, synthetic means a chemist in a laboratory looks at the crystalline form of a vitamin and attempts to reconstruct the exact structure with chemical combining from other sources...
Can you guess what kind of "other" sources, which by the way, do not have to be legally disclosed to the public? Let's take Vitamin B1-this vitamin is essential to improving the transmission of nerve impulses and d-alpha tocopherol (so-called Vitamin E) - this vitamin is essential to tissue repair. One is made from a coal tar derivative and the other is a byproduct of materials used by Eastman Kodak company to make film...
Again, synthetic "vitamins" should more accurately be called drugs, too.
According to research by Thiel RJ. Med Hypotheses, 2000:55(6):461-469: "some animal and human studies show the bioavailability of natural food complex vitamins is better than that of isolated United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) vitamins. Vitamin nutrition should come from foods or from food supplements that are as close as possible to food."
In other words, natural vitamins can help improve overall health because they resemble the fruits and vegetables and whole grains that are found in nature. In summary, you can't repair and rebuild a living body with dead chemicals.
