Type 2 Diabetes - Could Taking This One Vitamin Stop Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a condition that afflicts more than 79 million adults in the US alone. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people with prediabetes eventually succumb to Type 2 diabetes. With proper lifestyle change - losing weight, eating healthy and getting active - many of these cases of prediabetes could have been avoided in the first place.

However, there's new hope that a single vitamin may help healthy people stave off prediabetes. The magic vitamin? You guessed it, vitamin D. A new study published in Diabetes Care looked at vitamin D levels and prediabetes rates in a group of 13,000 adults. Those with inadequate vitamin D levels had a 45 percent greater prediabetes risk when compared to those who had ideal levels.

Before you say "not me", keep in mind that at least than 25 percent of adults are vitamin D deficient.

Why Vitamin D?

For decades, scientists only looked at vitamin D as a nutrient involved in bone. Its job, the prevailing "wisdom" stated, was to help calcium work. However, recent research has shed light on vitamin D's many roles - including preventing prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes.

Contrary to popular belief, being overweight or eating lots of sugar isn't the cause of Type 2 diabetes. It's what these risk factors do to the body that ultimately does or doesn't result in another case of diabetes. And what these risk factors do is dramatically skyrocket your levels of inflammation - a normally healthy process that causes serious harm when it goes out of control.

Inflammation affects diabetes in two ways. First, it blocks insulin activity, forcing your pancreas to work overtime by making more insulin to bridge the gap. Secondly, research shows that inflammation actually destroys the insulin producing cells of your pancreas, the beta cells.

One of the "new" roles in your body for this vitamin is regulating your immune system. Vitamin D and inflammation have a see-saw relationship: when the levels of this vitamin drop too low, inflammation rises.

This isn't to say that vitamin D can make up for an unhealthy lifestyle. But what this vitamin can do is help your body reduce inflammation no matter what state of health you are in. That will keep prediabetes away and may even reduce your risk of heart disease and certain cancers.

Aim for at least 2000 IU of vitamin D per day during the winter months or if you avoid the sun in the spring and summer. Vitamin D-rich foods are rare so you have two options to get your of this vitamin: sunlight and supplements. Both work equally well. However, too much sun exposure may put you at risk of melanoma, making supplements a safe (and cheap!) alternative.
